Glenwood Springs became a premiere destination, thanks to its proximity to lots of mineral springs flowing from limestone formations. Located between the Flat Top Mountains and a dramatic canyon at the confluence of the Colorado and Roaring Fork rivers, the city developed in the 1880s with large, grand resort hotels. The town center holds the world's largest hot-springs pool, a brick-lined wonder measuring 75 by 615 feet. The golden age of spas has passed, but Glenwood's red-brick architecture and hot-springs pools are intact. Glenwood is also the base camp for a marvelous new bike path; a 16.3-mile paved trail that runs parallel to the interstate. Here the canyon embraces a veritable ganglion of transportation. You'll see scores of rafters, freight trains and Amtrak superliners, and lots of drivers speeding by on Interstate 70. Surface: paved bike path. Things to See: Historic town with hot-springs baths, spectacular canyon scenery, section of Colorado River, historic power station.
