Pueblo has developed recreational facilities, taking advantage of its Arkansas River setting looking out at the West Mountains. In the early 1970s completion of a long-planned dam created "Lake" Pueblo among limestone cliffs. Crashing out of spectacular gorges to the north, the Arkansas River provides a popular flat-water float through this region before trundling on to Oklahoma, Little Rock, and the Mississippi River. The long version of this ride combines two connected trails. After looping around part of the reservoir (not all 60 miles), a paved, off-road trail continues east along the Arkansas by fairly pristine river bottoms before delivering you to the heart of town. Most of it is a perfect family ride. Surface: paved (mostly) bike path. Things to See: recreational reservoir, nature center, bird-of-prey rehabilitation center, historic architecture, cottonwood-lined river bottoms, "world's largest mural."
