Most mountain biking in Colorado is seasonal, because the best high-country trails are snowed and iced over from November to April. This is not the case at Lory State Park. Just west of Fort Collins, the 2,400-acre park offers challenging mountain biking almost year-round. It's rare to find single-track rides this exciting, inviting, and accessible in the foothills of the Front Range. A rugged red-rock escarpment on the park's eastern side envelops this high valley, making it feel like part of the mountains. There's frequent snow, yes, but lots of sunshine and warm days to keep the trails clear. This area includes short-grass prairie as well as ponderosa-pine forest. Cheatgrass, prickly pear, and yucca are scattered across the lower elevations, with mountain wildflowers like Indian paintbrush and harebells blooming at higher climes. Riders report seeing lots of wildlife, including eagles, deer, rabbits, and bear. Surface: gravel road, single-track dirt trails. Things to See: Red-rock formations, reservoir.
