Waterton Canyon provides access to one of the state's toughest rides: the 470-mile Colorado Trail, which crosses the Continental Divide numerous times en route to Durango. This is a relatively easy 6.2-mile ramble down a wide, auto-free, dirt road which offers as much scenic bang for your caloric buck as any ride in Colorado. Rising only about 100 feet a mile, this former railroad bed hastens away from Denver's urbanized fringe into a wildlife-rich canyon where you can't see, hear, or sense the city. Surface: A dirt road smooth enough for road bikes. Things to See: Quiet canyon walls, South Platte River, bighorn sheep.
