This is another great ride on the Colorado Trail. It offers a variety of terrain from smooth hardpack to loose rocks. Open meadows to aspen stands. Some climbing and some drops, but neither are long or difficult. The nearly 2 mile long drop to Johnson Gulch is just an all-out screamer and the best part of the ride. Terrain: Smooth hardpack, short sections of rough rocks. Jump on the Colorado Trail as it rolls uphill through the aspens. A clearing is reached with a spectacular view of South Park (1.8) just before beginning a moderately rocky climb to the high point of the ride (2.1). From the high point, the trail drops on small and loose rocks, sometimes steeply, before winding its way to a Colorado Trail sign in the middle of a meadow (3.4). The climb from the meadow is now on smoother, easier trail surface to a second high point (4.1). Begin as fast and as fun a drop as you will find, along the Front Range, to Johnson Gulch where the trail climbs on sandy trail to the Rock Creek Trailhead (6.4). Return via the same route.
