In 1946, Mobil Oil built the first half of what became a 15-mile, paved flat loop through the Everglades, a service road used for exploring the possibilities of discovering oil. If the Everglades survives in its natural form- a "river of grass"- then it will be partly due to there being only muck- and not oil- below the surface of the shallow waters. Of course, it didn't hurt this unique environment's chances when 1,500,000 acres were set aside by Congress in 1947 as the Everglades National Park. Even though this vast sawgrass swamp is a fraction of its former self, it is still an awesome place to visit. The trip on the tramway has an added treat for energetic bikers at the halfway point. A 65-foot-tall observation tower can be climbed to get a vulture's-eye view of an amazing landscape.
