This state forest's 20,000-plus acres used to be the domain of the DuPuis family, but it now serves as a state reserve where a 11-mile out-and-back trail plus a 28-mile out-and-back on doubletrack service roads provide the setting for a memorable ride near the great Lake Okeechobee. In addition to those two our-and-backs, you can ride a two-mile connector between DuPuis Grade and Power Line Grade, and a short 3-mile out-and-back called Cooter Creek Grade. Although Okeechobee now stays inside the bowl created by the levee surrounding it, this land contains plenty of wetlands. Native forests and flatwoods make up the bulk of the acreage, but the diversity of this landscape is revealed by its cypress domes, sawgrass prairie, and pasture; there's even 270-some-odd acres in citrus trees. Likewise, a wide range of animals make their home inside the reserve- wiggling, flapping, and galloping to their hearts' content.
