Technically, this six-mile out-and-back originates out of the Chacala Trail in Paynes Prairie, and many will ride this doubletrack in conjunction with the shorter Chacala Trail. But for most beginning and intermediate off-road bikers, making Cone's Dike a separate ride encourages a slower pace, giving more time for the thing this trail is best for anyway: exploration. The wet prairie has long been the home of a large assortment of wildlife. Taking a more deliberate pace through this grassland understory makes it possible to catch a family of raccoons out on an early morning forage. When they're surprised, they gallop through the dry palmetto fronds, knocking them together like castanets. Up on the dike, you can gaze across the prairie where wild bison and horses roam on 6.000 acres set aside for them and other animals.
