Granted, Cary State Forest will never host a national off-road mountain bike competition. What with its flat, wide doubletrack, it lacks much of the challenge found at racing venues. But the 18 miles of loops among pure stands of longleaf and slash pine allow a long day of riding and exploring 3,400 acres of one of Florida's four state forests. Cary's makes it a good place to observe the effects of forestry on the environment. It is also a good place to observe many wild creatures. Some- like the deer, turkey, coons, and gators- are familiar to off-road bikers in Florida, but one- the jaguarundi, a long-tailed wildcat- is so rare and secretive that it has been seen only once in approximately 25 years.
