A system of sandy, but basically level, Forest Service roads connect in a variety of loops, ranging from an 18-miler down to one less than a mile long. The longer rides are recommended in this Land of a Thousand Sinks. In this mysterious land, entire rivers disappear before your eyes. One such river, the Alapaha, flows out of Georgia on top but goes subterranean soon thereafter, only to pool up at Holton Creek and other rises. It is worth the ride to Holton Creek, if for no other reason than to contemplate one of these rises. It tweaks the imagination to watch this dark water appear- totally surrounded by tall limestone banks except for one opening, where it moves slowly downstream to the Suwannee River a mile away.
