Although no designated off-road singletrack for biking exists in Blackwater River State Forest, a 14-mile loop on sandy, red clay doubletrack service roads explores the rolling terrain between Coldwater and Dixon creeks. In drier weather, the sand almost becomes more challenging to ride than it's worth, but when the surface packs down after rains, even beginning riders should have little difficulty climbing the small hills. The forest's 183,000 acres join the Conecuh National Forest's 91,000 acres immediately to the north (in Alabama) for an unbroken expanse of longleaf pine and wire grass ecosystem- the world's largest example. The relatively undisturbed land is among the last places where the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker and gopher tortoise breed.
