Saying it's sandy in Florida is like saying it's cold in Alaska. If a native tells you to watch out, then prepare for the extreme. The Cookie Trail stands for perhaps Girl Scouting's most significant contribution to Florida off-road biking. Where the wide trail has been covered with pine straw and bark, traction is sufficient. Future troop projects call for completely covering the trailway with a layer of wood chips, but until then, long loose stretches of sugar-fine sand will even make pushing the bike a challenge in places. Longleaf pines and wire grass grow among yaupon shrubs and palmettos. Low-growing flowers colonize the habitat of burrowing lizards that tunnel through the sandy dunes. White egrets stalk the water's edge, looking to stab themselves a meal. And, since the lagoon is open to the sea, dolphins can sometimes be seen slowly swimming to the surface, then exploding into the air.
