America's early coastal defenses called for building numerous forts positioned on barrier islands. Florida's westernmost island, Santa Rosa Island -- part of Gulf Islands National Seashore -- has a nineteenth-century military base where today's visitors can mount patrol by pedal. A six-mile out-and-back of doubletrack layered with oyster shell begins by the Fort Pickens Visitor Center, go through the camping loops (200 sites) and Blackbird Marsh, and end at the beach at Battery Langdon.
