Guilford, one of Connecticut's shoreline towns, has more than one hundred houses built in the eighteenth century and the oldest stone house in the United States, plus one of the prettiest trees-as you will soon see. Things to see: Guilford Green and harbor; Henry Whitfield House, Hyland House, Griswold House, Monastery of Our Lady of Grace. Begin in Guilford at the junction of I–95 and Route 77, where you can park in either of the two commuter parking lots on the north side of I–95. Ride south on Route 77. You are heading toward the Guilford Green and the sea. After about 1 mile, you’ll come to the green. This is one of the loveliest commons in New England. It is flanked by a spired white Congregational church, stately houses, and quaint shops. At the green turn right onto Broad Street and then left on Whitfield Street, which will take you down to the Sound. In a mile you will see the striking Henry Whitfield House on the left. Built in 1639 with dense stone walls, a sixty-degree, sloping tiled roof, leaded windows, and twin chimneys, it is reputedly the oldest stone house in America. It is furnished with period pieces and is open to the public.
