Another of Florida’s spectacular rides, it begins in a parking lot in the Gulf of Mexico and swings through environmentally delicate land. Looping around a perfectly straight and quite artificial stretch of the Withlacoochee River, it returns to the Gulf via shady lanes along “Follow That Dream Parkway.” Traffic and hazards: Traffic will be light but fast on the narrow parts of the ride. The first part of this ride qualifies as one of the downright prettiest spots in the world. From the Gulf of Mexico along the two-lane and admittedly narrow CR 40 through Yankeetown on Riverside Drive and back on 40 through “Crackertown” to US 19/98, the scenery is picturesque. For the first 3 miles, you will bike from an islet, which is half a mile or more out in the Gulf, to the mainland, and the beauty—with no rooftops or condominiums to spoil the view—breathtaking. There are wide expanses of salt marsh, and the shimmering Gulf itself is dotted with dozens of tiny coastal islands. Birds are everywhere.
