Among hard-core bikers, Florida is best known for endurance rides because the only constant challenges are the heat and the traffic. You can conquer both on this satisfying loop through the countryside south of Gainesville. Borrowing the nickname of the great Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton, “sweetness” is the best way to describe it. Traffic and hazards: Both Williston Road (SR 121) and U.S. Highway 441 have well-marked bike lanes, but both are heavily trafficked, especially on weekday mornings and evenings as people commute to and from Gainesville and the University of Florida. Otherwise, the country roads are narrow with dirt-and-grass shoulders. Traffic in the countryside is light.
