This is an important ride in Florida, sociology happening all around. Of course, it is flat, very flat. The route, however, courses from one of the fastest growing cities— Jacksonville—to an old-fashioned town with a legacy of turpentine, pulpwood, and whiskey stills deep in the Baker County swamps—Macclenny. A delightful leg cruises the multipurpose Jacksonville-Baldwin Trail. Traffic and hazards: Except for the brief but enjoyable 5 percent of the ride on the multipurpose trail, there is some danger of traffic. Keep your guard up on the U.S. highways, 90 and 301, and on those sections on Normandy Boulevard (County Road 228) east of US 301, which are being widened and repaved to accommodate the new subdivisions in West Duval. You will be able to pedal more freely on County Roads 217 and 218, on CR 228 between US 301 and Macclenny, and even on Yellow Water Road between Baldwin and Normandy Boulevard (CR 217). None of these roads have bike lanes, however, and even the paved shoulders are narrow.
