Maclay State Gardens is a large park between urban Tallahassee and suburban Leon County. It has marvelous formal gardens, two lakes, and a series of trails, all on former plantation lands at the foot of the Red Hills district. The district consists of a large group of old, mainly cotton, plantations that occupy the northern part of Leon County into southern Georgia. Most were used as hunting lodges after the mid-1800s. The old fields have regrown naturally into an upland magnolia hardwood-pine forest; this covers most of the property that isn’t part of the plantation house gardens. The manor house in the garden area, open to public viewing, retains its old furnishings, and the outbuildings are presently used for conferences and weddings. The paved trail goes through some of the garden area, and the unpaved trails are all under the forest canopy of the regrown fields. In addition to the riding trails, there are hiking-only trails in both park and gardens; horses are available for rent on most weekends. The horses use the double-track dirt trails. Trails: Paved park roads, 5.0 miles; paved nonmotorized bike bath, 1.5 miles; dirt double tracks, 8.0 miles.
