The West Orange Trail passes through a mix of developing and rural Florida, a few miles west of metropolitan Orlando along the borders of Lake Apopka. Though the lake can only be seen in a few places, its influence is a major part of the history of the communities along this trail. At one time the most polluted lake in the state, Lake Apopka is making a comeback due to the efforts of the regional water management district and the state legislature. Once part of a thriving citrus industry, the area’s growth and the suburban and urban connections to the trail have replaced most of the citrus trees except in a few areas around Winter Garden. This is Florida’s only rail-trail that boasts a sign indicating that you are approaching a hill and need to use caution. The constant changes in scenery and the relaxed atmosphere of the towns along the way make this a great outing. Surface: Asphalt; 14 feet wide. Location: Orange County.
