This was the first rail-trail built in Florida. It runs the length of Gasparilla Island on Florida’s southwestern coast through the town of Boca Grande. Gasparilla Island is a semitropical paradise filled with the homes of wealthy residents who care deeply about their trail. Traveling past stately homes, expensive shops, swaying palm trees, and streaking iguanas makes this a great outing. The terrain is flat, the vegetation next to the trail is lush, and there’s always something interesting to see. Indeed, you won’t have an opportunity to travel past so much wealth anywhere else in the state. Don’t expect cheap hamburgers or an inexpensive place to sleep. The beach is free, but everything else reflects the local population. You even have to pay a toll ($3.50) to get onto the island in the first place. Surface: Asphalt; a 10-foot-wide roadway with a 4-foot pedestrian trail winding around it. Location: Lee and Charlotte Counties.
