Here's a ride for those slow-twitch muscle types who can ride on and on and on and on without so much as a need to stop and fill up the water bottle once or twice. With 185 miles of off-road riding in one fell-swoop (and this is just one way), the C&O canal towpath is one ride sure to challenge those who thrive on endurance activities. But few (in fact, almost none) of the cyclists who take to the canal each year attempt to ride the entire distance at once. However, anyone looking for a great trip along the Potomac River (leaving right from Georgetown) with virtually no elevation gain in sight should love this ride. Try it in sections, camp overnight, stay at some of the inns along the way to Cumberland, MD, or just ride up and down the canal near the city. Either way, it's a jewel for cyclists looking for an endless trip off the beaten path that leaves right from town.
