If you could only block out the traffic, this would be the city ride that would make you forget you’re in the city, for these are both Washington’s leafiest and most affluent neighborhoods, each with its own character. Georgetown, which existed as a thriving port long before the District of Columbia was conceived, has its brick sidewalks, cobblestone streets, and absurdly narrow row houses; Dupont Circle, its bistro and bookstore nightlife; Cleveland Park, its rambling wooden houses and big shade trees; and Embassy Row, its mansions that could have been plucked from Gatsby’s North Shore. A stop along the way, the National Cathedral, features rolling grounds punctuated by flowering trees, and an herb garden that would be the envy of its English progenitors. Things to see: Phillips Gallery, Washington Cathedral, four historic districts, Embassy Row.
