Thought Florida was flat, did ya? If this is your first tour of central Florida, you may be in for some surprises. Rising to the grand elevation of 310 feet, Sugar Loaf affords a panoramic view of glistening Lake Apopka and various smaller lakes. The entire metric century is a jaunt from one lake to another: Lake Dora, Lake Beauclair, Lake Harris, Little Lake Harris, Grassy Lake, and Lake Jem. The first leg of the ride departs from Mount Dora with a relaxing sweep alongside Lake Dora. After negotiating through Tavares, the route passes briefly through citrus groves of orange and grapefruit trees where sprawling ranch houses sit in the midst of sand and fruit trees. Marinas and more lakefront homes appear with brief glimpses of Lake Harris. Then, it’s on to Astatula and a straightaway on county road 561 for a hookup with the loop around Sugar Loaf Mountain.
