This ride begins on St. Marks Trail, a 10-foot wide, paved Recreation trail (converted from an old railroad bed) that runs 16.2 miles to the town of St. Marks. Open to bicyclists, hikers, and horsemen and women, the trail follows the route of the Tallahassee-to-St. Marks Railroad. The best time to cycle this busy trail is by the light of a full moon. From St. Marks, cyclists can either head back to Tallahassee or venture beyond the trail to the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and the St. Marks Lighthouse. The refuge is a nesting place for 98 species of birds, you can easily sight osprey, the southern bald eagle, and species of pelican and egret. Terrain: flat with a slight head wind off the gulf.
