You will be riding between Channel-Port-aux-Basques and Cape Ray, on the southern tip of the west side of Newfoundland. This ride to Cape Ray follows the right-of-way of the old Canadian National Railway line. The abandoned railroad bed is being developed by the Newfoundland Trailway Council as part of the Trans-Canada Trail. Known as the Trailway Provincial Park, the trail will one day stretch 548 miles, from Channel-Port-aux-Basques to St. John's. This ride begins a section of the route named the Wreckhouse Trail. On a sunny afternoon in August, when the sand dunes and picturesque beaches near Cape Ray make you wonder whether you've been transported down to the Caribbean, it is difficult to imagine the conditions that led to this name. However, winds can blow across this southwestern corner of Newfoundland with gusts of up to 100 miles per hour. When the trains were still running, derailments were common along this section of the railroad. currently offers topo maps from the entire United States. We plan to expand our topomap database in the future, however this map is not available at this time. Thank you for your understanding.
