Morrissey Ridge rises high above the Fernie Elk Basin, with the Elk River Valley and the Lizard Range to the west. This 11.52-mile out-and-back climbs from Coal Creek Road to a pair of communication towers on the top of the ridge. Beginning in the valley of Coal Creek, the road rises quickly, crossing a sharp side-cut with a steep drop to the right toward a tributary of Coal Creek. Numerous small waterfalls dot this creek and tumble their way toward coal Creek - and eventually the Pacific Ocean. Farther along, the trail branches several times, allowing for many exploratory routes. While most of these routes are not shown on topographic maps, you can wander widely on this pleasant upland.
