This fun hike explores a mine and ore-processing site listed on the National Register of Historic Places. View a smelting complex where ore was turned into iron. Explore the well-preserved remains, including an intact blast furnace, roasting ovens, and more. From here take the Donkey Trail past mine entrances and air shafts where iron ore was dug, as well as granite quarries. Leave the rocky hillside to join the old Hodge Road. Walk the Shepaug River valley, returning to the furnace site. Explore more of the complex before the short finale back to the trailhead.
