Exploring some of the high country in the remote Mineral King part of Sequoia National Park, this hike climbs steeply out of the Mineral King Valley into White Chief Basin, where beautifully unusual geology reigns. The Mineral King Valley is one of the most geologically diverse parts of the Sierra Nevada. The granite typical of the great stretch of mountains from Yosemite to the regions south of Sequoia National Park is interrupted here by a large band of sedimentary rocks of marine origin, as well as metavolcanic rock. The unusual geology caught the attention of nineteenth-century miners, and the area had numerous claims and prospects.
