This hike enters the Kaiser Wilderness, an isolated block of high granite peaks on the west side of the Sierra Nevada. Hikers find sculpted granite peaks, beautiful lakes, meadows, and swift creeks. The Kaiser Wilderness protects a high, east-west-trending ridge that lies well to the west of the main crest of the Sierra Nevada. Coming from the west, this is one of the most easily accessed mountain regions between Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks. Much of the surrounding terrain is heavily wooded, and tall Kaiser Peak and its subordinate towers rise like a granite island, offering refuge to hikers looking for an alpine destination. Kaiser Ridge runs along the latitudinal axis of the wilderness. Most of the best terrain lies on the north side of the ridge. This area has experienced heavy glaciation.
