This hike makes a pleasant loop through volcanic tablelands at the extreme northern end of the Sacramento Valley. Views of many peaks around the valley are abundant, highlighted by a historic overlook high above the Sacramento River as it leaves the mountainous terrain and begins the long meander to the sea. The Sacramento River, California’s longest and largest river, begins in the high peaks just west of Mount Shasta. From there it is a wild waterway, flowing south through the mountains until it reaches massive Lake Shasta. Beyond the large reservoir the river flows through a more subdued land of hills and tall, cut banks. It still manages to retain some of its mountain character and has numerous rapids and rises.
