Traveling across the high desert of Lava Beds National Monument, this hike offers views of distant volcanoes and up- close exposure to extensive lava ?ows. Near the trailhead is one of the park’s many lava tubes, where permanent ice is slowly melting. Lava Beds National Monument preserves a large patch of high-desert terrain at the western edge of the Modoc Plateau. This high upland in the northeast corner of California boasts numerous volcanic features, including lava flows, cinder cones, and old craters. The Lava Beds contain one of the highest concentrations of these features as well as an amazing number of lava tubes. Human history has also left its imprint on the Lava Beds, as it was the home of the Modoc War in the late nineteenth century.
