This hike travels through the remote North Yolla Bolly Mountains, which lie at the southern tip of the Klamath Mountains. Here a network of trails climb through a lush mountain basin to small alpine lakes and then continues higher to the summit of Black Rock Mountain, one of the range’s two high peaks. Regardless of which mountain region they fall into, these isolated peaks are very scenic. The North Yolla Bollies have a well-de veloped trail network, which makes exploring them a pleasure. The trails are focused on Pettijohn Basin, the bowl that lies between North Yolla Bolly (the highest peak in the northern part of the wilderness) and Black Rock Mountain. In addition to old-g rowth forests, the basin is home to small meadows and a pair of small lakes, each lying at the foot of one of the two peaks. The trail network also climbs up to the rim of the basin, where it is possible to climb to the summit of the high peaks. The best destinations are those on the Black Rock Mountain side of Pettijohn Basin. Black Rock Lake is easily the prettier of the two small lakes, and the summit of the namesake mountain boasts a panoramic vista and the ruins of an old lookout tower. Both peak and lake make great destinations for easy to moderate day hikes.
