This surprisingly wild hike leads through oak savannas and grassy hillsides to scenic panoramas and rugged rock scrambles set in beautiful creeks. The San Francisco Bay Area is blessed with an overabundance of public land within easy striking distance of urban areas. A surprising number of these parks have retained much of their wild characteristics and offer hikers great options for getting outdoors and enjoying beautiful scenery. Few of the Bay Area parks can rival the Sunol Regional Wilderness for both its wild nature and the rugged, diverse, and scenic landscape. Managed as a wilderness area, the majority of the park beyond the visitor center is untamed and untrammeled. The variety of the preserve is impressive. Oak-covered hills and grassy ridges are typical here, but there are some rugged peaks and craggy rock outcroppings. One of the highlights is the rocky gorge of Little Yosemite, which manages to live up to its bold name and does not fail to impress.
