This rail-trail runs from the bustling university town of Gainesville to sleepy Hawthorne, through some of Florida’s finest terrain. While the trail is a bit hillier than the other rail-trails in the state, it is still quite flat along most of its route. Its 16.5-mile length makes it perfect for a day trip, and the state preserve through which it runs—Paynes Prairie, one of Florida’s most treasured natural areas—provides ample opportunities for wildlife spotting, plant identification, and photography. Be sure to take time to walk around the preserve and read about the flora and fauna that call this region home.
