Running between Lakeland and Bartow in suburban Polk County, the Fort Fraser Trail operates on a portion of the former South Florida Railroad’s Pemberton Ferry Branch. Built in 1885, the line connected the present- day ghost town of Pemberton Ferry in the north with Bartow in the south, passing through the railroad’s main line in Lakeland along the way. The sole stop between Lakeland and Bartow was in Highland City, now home to the Fort Fraser Trail’s main trailhead.
