This small loop campground can be tight when full but is otherwise nice and sits atop one of the many rolling hills so common here. The lake that used to be the hallmark of this park is now a field—dry save for the stream splitting it thanks to the dam having been breached for safety reasons. The state has plans to refill the dam in time. But for now the lake’s disappearance has most assuredly cut into visitation. Thirteen miles of hiking trails beg to be walked. One trail passes by Chess Cemetery, a graveyard deep in the woods, and beneath a cathedral of mature trees. Along the way you’re likely to see white-tailed deer, gray and fox squirrels, and turkeys. Black bears, once unheard of in this part of the state, have started showing up here as well.
