Tidal Information: 3.46-foot mean tidal range at Newport. In the East Passage, just west of Castle Hill, the current floods north with an average max speed of 0.7 knots and ebbs southwest at an average max speed of 1.2 knots. The mouth of the Sakonnet has weak and variable currents.
Hazards/Cautions: Newport’s south side is subject to open ocean conditions. Even on days with small seas, swells will grow into sizable waves as they roll over the shallow water and rocks. There are long stretches with few or no easy bailouts; have solid rescue skills before attempting this route and be prepared to be in your boat for a while.
