Activity Type: Sea Kayaking
Nearby City: Phippsburg
Distance: 20 nautical miles
Tidal Information: 8.48-foot mean tidal range in the Kennebec River. Floods north, ebbs south. Fast currents develop in some constricted areas, developing standing waves and other features that most will want to avoid. Exercise caution in Lower Hell Gate, Goose Rocks Passage, and the mouth of the Kennebec, particularly near Jack Rock. The tide change upriver takes place later than at the mouth: check tide and current charts. The tide change at Mill Point on the Sasanoa River generally occurs about a half-hour later than at Fort Popham.
Hazards/Cautions: Strong currents. Open ocean conditions at southern end of Georgetown Island.
Season: Year-round
Local Maps: NOAA chart #13293; Maptech #76; Waterproof Chart #102
Driving Directions: Directions to Georgetown Island
