Tidal Information: 9.78-foot mean tidal range in Rockland. In the Fox Island Thorofare, tidal current floods east, ebbs west. Flooding tide meets between Iron and Zeke points. Elsewhere it generally floods to the north.
Hazards/Cautions: To cross to the Fox Islands from either side of Penobscot Bay requires a substantial crossing that should only be undertaken by experienced paddlers. Potentially rough seas, strong currents, and a gamut of boat traffic surrounds the islands. There are especially strong currents in Hurricane Sound. The entrance to the Basin develops whitewater during peak flow.
