There are no waterfalls or mountain views to wow you on this hike. But ironically, this is one of Southern California’s best gifts to dogs of all ages and fitness levels. Dogs are not allowed on San Clemente State Beach, but the hard- packed sand trail tracing the beach combines a front-row view of the surfers catching waves with a coastal nature experience. Beachfront trails are typically paved and multi-use in Southern California. But San Clemente Beach Trail’s sandy surface sets the tone for a more natural experience suitable for beach cruisers rather than inline skates and road cycles. The trail parallels the beach between North Beach at one end and Calafia Beach at the south end. An Amtrak rail line also happens to parallel the beach, and the trail occasionally alternates from the inland side to the ocean side of the tracks and beach.
