A short stretch of graded dirt road in the Angeles National Forest drops you at the head of a scenic riparian canyon flanked by sandstone walls, sage, and chaparral yucca. The trail crosses several seasonal creeks before the mellow climb to a projection overlooking a dramatic seasonal waterfall. The Angeles National Forest rises up above Sunland, one of the older communities north of Los Angeles. One minute you are crossing residential intersections and the next you are driving in the shadow of the San Gabriel Mountains’ steep, rocky chararral slopes. The Angeles National Forest was established in 1892 and covers about 700,000 acres. Elevations range from 1,200 to more than 10,000 feet.
