Wildwood Park’s 1,800 acres are a surprising open- space oasis on the edge of a suburban neighborhood. Views of unusual geologic formations from the cactus- carpeted ridge, a shady creekside canyon, and a year- round waterfall make this relatively short hike’s variety a tail- wagging experience. The Chumash Indians made this land home for thousands of years before the Spanish settlers arrived. During the early 1800s this expansive swath of land and its various wildlife habitats were part of Rancho El Conejo. The grasslands were prime grazing territory for cattle and sheep through the 20th century. Between the 1930s and 1960s, Wildwood Park was a popular film and television- series set for Hollywood studios.
