At 2571 feet, Mount Tam’s East Peak provides one of the best panoramic views in the Bay Area. The mountain was once home to the Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods Scenic Railway. Built in 1896, it was called the “Crookedest Railroad in the World” for its 281 curves in just 8.25 miles. To get to Mount Tam from the city, San Franciscans would board a ferry to Sausalito and then a train to Mill Valley, where they would start their forty-?ve-minute trip to the summit.
