Hike in and camp at this split cascade deep in the northwestern Adirondacks. If you haven’t done much hiking in the Adirondack region, you may not have encountered New York’s protected wild forests. Grasse River Wild Forest represents a tiny fraction of the 3.7 million acres of forested land protected by the state, but this maple, beech, oak, and birch woodland includes some of the region’s most notable trails and waterfalls. The Grasse River/Tooley Pond area (see Tooley Pond Tract Falls) is also part of this carefully preserved forest. It’s an easy walk to Harper Falls, albeit a buggy one from late May to mid-June. Your hike follows a former road until you arrive at the river, where slabs of granite and large boulders make for some energetic clambering around for the best view-point of the falls.
