A massive cascade provides an introduction to this city’s magnificent gorges. The last of seven falls in Fall Creek Gorge—the famous gorge behind Cornell University—Ithaca Falls is one of the largest, so you might expect it to be a bit more celebrated in the city, perhaps with a nice overlook park and some services and landscaping. All of these things are planned for what will be known as Ithaca Falls Overlook Park, but first the city must continue a brownfield cleanup at the adjacent Ithaca Gun factory site. Lead was used in the manufacturing process at this former fi rearm facility, and a great deal of it remains in the ground here. Your walk will be brief, from the parking area to the bridge over Fall Creek and down a dirt pathway along the creek to the falls. Watch out for the inevitable trash at this urban site; feeling the spray from this powerful falls at close range will make the rest of the conditions here seem minor.
