Clarendon’s own fault line produced this sparkling water feature, and a town grew up around it. If you’ve never heard of the Clarendon-Linden Fault System, chances are you don’t live here in Orleans County—so you may be surprised to learn that a fault line runs right through Clarendon as well as through Genesee, Wyoming, and Allegany Counties. Earthquakes are rare in upstate New York, and none have had much impact in recent history, but when a tremor does rattle the crockery in our kitchens, it generally originates along this fault. A slip along the fault line actually created Clarendon Falls.
