There is a serious and even somber air to much of Washington Heights. Its western anchor is Columbia-Presbyterian’s massive cluster of medical buildings. In the middle of the neighborhood is the Audubon Ballroom, the site of Malcolm X’s assassination and now an educational center. The southern border is taken up by the Trinity Church cemeteries and the imposing Church of the Intercession. The eastern section is lighter-hearted, with the uniquely charming row houses of Sylvan Terrace and the aristocratic Morris-Jumel Mansion. Interspersed throughout “WaHi” are many prewar buildings, various schools and houses of worship, and small parks. It’s also home to the Audubon Terrace museums and dramatic outdoor sculptures.
