Tourists, not to mention many New Yorkers, don’t usually trek beyond First Avenue on the Upper East Side, especially because subway service is already three avenues away and most of the city’s major attractions are elsewhere. But Yorkville is where you find Gracie Mansion, home to many New York City mayors, as well as the quiet and expansive Carl Schurz Park. John Jay Park, a bit farther south, has a wonderful swimming pool and is bordered by the magnificent apartments of Cherokee Place, a street many New Yorkers have never heard of. (They may even think you made this up!) This area also encompasses the moneyed residences of Sutton Place, as well as the think tank known as The Rockefeller University. And walking this far east affords you some prime views of the East River. Especially if the weather is pleasant, this can be a very enjoyable jaunt. Try to do the walk on a Wednesday, when you can take an inside tour of Gracie Mansion.
