What once was called Longacre Square was renamed for The New York Times in 1904, the year that the newspaper moved its offices to a spanking-new skyscraper on 42nd Street. Ever since, Times Square has been a mecca for performance and splashy advertisement, such as the huge billboard for Camel cigarettes that showed a man blowing smoke rings. That’s gone, but now the Naked Cowboy strolls around strumming a guitar and wearing little more than a wide-brimmed hat. Almost all of the Broadway theaters are located here, plus innumerable stores, restaurants, and special attractions.
