Chelsea is an exciting mix of old and new, residential and commercial, religious and cultural, with some iconic spots that have played significant roles in New York history (some of that history being rather sordid). From its parks to its schools, minor museums to nightclubs, this is a stimulating area to explore. Much of Chelsea has a more leisurely pace and residential feel than busy Midtown to the north and funky Greenwich Village to the south. The two main drags are 14th Street and 23rd Street, both home to a wide variety of sights; the latter has one of Manhattan’s most recognizable structures, the Flatiron Building.
